A DAY WITH THE INMATES OF DUM DUM PRISON

DUM DUM: Sr. Lucy Kachira, Sr. Esther Rani Abraham, Sr. Mary John, Sr. Anima Xalxo, three co-operators and ten students of Auxilium Dum Dum had the joy of celebrating the 67th Independence Day of our Mother Land, India with the inmates of Dum Dum prison on 15th August 2013. There are almost 5000 prisoners including 200 children and 500 women. Most of them are Bangladeshis.

We distributed clothes, sweets and other necessities of life. It is heart breaking to see so many innocent children being deprived even of the basic need of life. Students performed cultural program for the inmates. The welfare manager, Mr. Prasant Kumar Majhi. explained to us the procedures and the developmental programs organized for them by the Government. We visited their IGP centre where they make art and craft products. The Welfare Manager appealed to the students to make our society a better place to live by helping those unfortunate people to insert themselves into the main stream of the society. We assured him of our support. We are grateful to Fr. Scaria Nedumattathil SDB for having given us this opportunity to be of some help to these suffering people.
