Brief History

Mirik is a tourist spot in the Hills of Darjeeling in West Bengal. Mirik is 50 kms from Siliguri and around 45 kms from Darjeeling and is well connected by roads. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra (55 kms away) and the nearest Railway station at New Jalpaiguri (57 kms). This place was bought in the year 2008 February from the Sisters of Mary Immaculate who lived here for 25 years.

In 2008 April the first group of 3 sisters began staying in the house which needed renovation. They were attached to the community of New Chumta. They continued the parish and village apostolate, and the boarding for the poor girls of the locality. Due to scarcity of water a well was dug with the help of the local people. They went down about 60 ft and found a big rock which could not blast and they had to cover it up.

Then they tried in another spot and found water to a depth of 90 ft. In summer again there was the problem of water. In 2009 a bore well was drilled to a depth of 250 ft and plenty of water was found. This water contains plenty of iron and so a filter was put up to clean the water. Until the community was established in 2011 the sisters were attached first to the community of New Chumta. On 24th June 2011 the new community with three members was installed by the provincial Sr. Maria Pettayil, followed by concelebrated solemn Eucharist by the four Salesians from Don Bosco, Mirik.
